Spying on the Feral Cat Population – Game Cam Night One

During the whole winter here I have seen about 15 cats wander on and off the property at different times. Some became regular faces, others I only saw once or twice, all of them were severely feral and would run if they knew I was around. This included our own cat, Phanny, a fierce mouser she was also semi-feral. She was so pissed at us for moving we’ve scarcely seen hide nor tail of her but every once in a while she graces us with a glimpse – or a dead mouse.

A week or so ago we woke up at 3 in the morning to the sound of a cat having an epic fight with…. something. We found tufts of fur the next day strewn everywhere but this was not the tom cat hair we were expecting. We think it was either a possum or a raccoon but we had no real way of telling for sure. The cat food dishes went untouched for a few days and then they’d go empty, just like that. I was suspicious we were no longer feeding cats but some sort of wild beast so we bought a game cam.

It had been up all of three minutes when a cat appeared, it looked like Phanny but it’s impossible to say in the dark but perhaps she’ll grace the camera with a day time shot tomorrow. Here she looks up at the door – she must have been watching when we put the turkey in her bowl.

She takes the turkey from the bowl and scarfs it down…

Then she looks up, she sees something…

MOULTRIE DIGITAL GAME CAMERA

What does she see? Probably this guy….. a large tom, maybe white or a light pointed variety, with a distinctive chunk taken out of his ear…

He eats…

And then disappears only to have Phanny reappear for one last bite…

At 10:24 an unidentified cat walks in front of the camera but doesn’t eat…

From 11:18-11:20 Phanny takes another bite.

Three minutes later “Squinty” arrives. He’s often seen with Phanny so this is not surprise.

Squinty ate for a few minutes, left, and came back at 2:09 for another quick bite.

A few minutes after Squinty’s departure this funny looking cat showed up. I KNEW it! I was feeding a raccoon!! We’ll call this one Bandit.

MOULTRIE DIGITAL GAME CAMERA

Bandit was not as camera shy as the cats. He stuck around for 10 shots from 2:20-2:31. This being the best shot.

At 6:43-45 Phanny reappears:

Then an unexpected thief….

And finally short-haird Phanny came for a visit. (She needs a better moniker. Maybe I should ask the neighbors I think she’s actually owned, she might already have a name!)

And that was our first night with the game cam. I will be back later to post more updates. I will likely be using the game cam as a tool to tag and identify strays, learn their habits, and keep a record of their behavior. I will also be cataloging any wildlife that comes by.
